Metabolism
In a fish's body, salt (NaCl) acts as a regulator of osmotic pressure. Its presence inside or outside cells controls the entry and exit of water, thus regulating osmotic pressure (osmoregulation). Osmotic pressure is the force with which water moves across the cytoplasmic membrane from a solution containing a low concentration of dissolved substances to one with a high concentration of solutes.
Treatment
Parasites cause infestations and injuries to fish gills, which further facilitates water entry into the body and loss of blood salts, impairing osmoregulation.
