### Total Hardness Test Kit
**Description:**
The concentration of metal ions, mainly Calcium (Ca+) and Magnesium (Mg+), gives water what is conventionally called Water Hardness or Total Hardness. Other metal ions such as iron, aluminum, manganese, and zinc can also influence hardness values but usually occur in insignificant concentrations. Since most of the Ca+ and Mg+ ions are in the form of carbonate (CO3--) and bicarbonate (HCO3) salts, hardness values often correspond to alkalinity values (Carbonate Hardness).
In waters where Total Hardness exceeds Alkalinity, part of the Ca+ and Mg+ ions are associated with sulfates, nitrates, chlorides, and silicates. Conversely, in situations of high Alkalinity and low Total Hardness, part of the carbonates and bicarbonates are associated with Na+ and K+ ions instead of Ca+ and Mg+. Water hardness is expressed in equivalents of CaCO3 (mg/liter or ppm) or in German Degrees (°dH).
To determine the ideal hardness level in the tank, you need to know the type of fish being raised, as each species responds differently to water hardness, which can affect production.
**Instructions for Use:**
1. Collect water from the tank to be tested with the test tube, filling exactly to the 5 ml mark.
2. Add 2 drops of reagent solution 1, cap the tube, and shake.
3. Add one measure of reagent 2, cap the tube, and shake. The solution will turn red. The amount of this reagent does not need to be exact, as it is an indicator; a larger quantity will only intensify the color.
4. Add reagent solution 3 drop by drop, counting the number of drops and shaking after each drop added. When the color changes to blue, record the number of drops used.
5. Check the water hardness condition:
- 1 drop - 3 dH - very soft water
- 1 to 3 drops - 3 to 8 dH - soft water
- 3 to 6 drops - 8 to 17 dH - semi-hard water
- 6 to 9 drops - 17 to 25 dH - hard water
- More than 9 drops - very hard water
